Question:-  Explain Leadership theories and suggest a theory for a leader you have known in a workplace or in a community group. How does your suggested theory differ from the manager's current leadership style? What is it about your recommended theory that makes it preferable over the manager's current style?

Answer:-

Identifying the selected theories

The situational leadership theory selected is the Path-goal Theory and the Emerging Leadership theory is the Functional Leadership Model.

Explanation of the theories

A detailed explanation of these two theories will determine the pattern of leadership that is carried out by the leaders towards the team members or the subordinates at the time of work.

Path-goal Theory- This type of leadership theory deals with the particular behavioural pattern of the leader of a team according to the demand of the employees. In clear analysis this leadership theory can be stated as the style of the leader that frequently changes accordingly. The leader changes the pattern of behaviour according to the situation and from one staff to another to get the work done in an effective and fast way (Ford, 2010).

Functional Leadership Model- This type of leadership theory is based on the behaviour of the leaders and that too in a caring way towards the team members in order to get the task done within the given time. In this theory of leadership the leaders are equally concentrated towards the entire team and each team member individually (Ivancevich, Konopaske & Matteson, 2014).

Anticipating the need of different leadership theories

Previously the theories of leadership were of similar pattern. With change in the modes of operation and the needs of the workers it is necessary for the leaders to change the leading styles. Whatever the situation demands the leaders need to change the pattern of behaviour to get the task done. To tackle any rough employee Autocratic leading is required on the other side, when employees are putting enough effort, functional leading will be enough to fulfil the target.

Situation wise evaluation

Whatever the requirements are, it is the responsibility of the leaders to get the works done accordingly. In fact, the leadership pattern must change according to the change in situation. The leader’s behaviour must have to be enough to motivate the team members in getting the tasks done. Therefore it is needed to change the pattern of leading as per as the situation demand (Litz, 2011).

Suggesting a leadership theory in workplace

It is difficult to suggest a particular type of leadership style in a workplace. In general basis, the leadership style should be according to the situation. But at present the workers are goal oriented and that is the reason leaders are intended to introduce functional leadership model. It insists the leader to behave according to the work pattern and mind set of the team members.

Differentiation between manager’s current leadership styles

Previously, the leaders use to make the team members listen to the orders. The leaders use to command the team members in order to get the tasks done by force. Team members were not involved in any sort of decision making. At present, the leading styles are very open. The leaders consult with the team members and make them feel comfortable in doing any task. The leaders take the responsibility to assist the entire team and members individually in order to get the task done (Thompson & Vecchio, 2009).

Recommendation

After making a detailed study on the leadership theories, it can be concluded that the present day leadership styles are the best way of leading. Whatever the team needs, the leaders are ready to assist. The leader involves the members while taking decision and implementing any order. Therefore the emerging theory of leadership is best suited.
