Executive Summary

Maintaining the ethical behaviour is very important in every type of profession. There are some different ethical considerations for different kind of professions. To understand the different ethics of two different industries, the professions of chef from the hospitality industry and professor from the education industry is chosen for this assignment. The description of the ethical considerations and their importance in the workplaces are discussed first with a generalized view. After that, the individual code of ethical behaviour is discussed for the two selected professions. Each of the two professions has some specific responsibilities and ethical considerations regarding the behaviour within the workplaces. What are the right things to do and what are the wrong are mentioned by analyzing the ethics of both of the professions. Then a detailed comparison is given in this assignment. Although the two jobs are different from each other, there are some similarities among the ethics of workplaces. By the comparative analysis, it has been found that there are some basic codes of ethical behaviour that are applicable in all the field of profession. At the last of this assignment, a brief conclusion is given by summarizing the outcomes of the detailed analysis.  

Introduction

Code of ethics within the workplaces referred to the appropriate and expected the behaviour of the members or employees of the workplace. Every type of the work needs some ethical principle, values and some expectations in the behaviours of the employees within the workplaces. These code ethics are needed to assist the employees to take effectively the responsibility of their job positions and resolve the ethical issues regarding their jobs within the workplaces (Clough, 2012). In this assignment, the ethics of two different professions from two different types of the industry will be discussed. The two chosen professions are the chef from the hospitality industry and professor from the education industry.

Ethics and professional conducts in workplace

The code of ethics within the workplaces provides some rules and regulations for the employees. It designed for giving proper guidance to the employees regarding the responsibilities and behaviour in the workplaces. Ethical principles are described with respect to the type of work and the applicable laws. It is a crucial part of the employment in any organization (Harris, 2010). The ethics in the workplaces have a high level of priority because it helps to perform high performance and a good teamwork that is very much needed for getting success in any profession. There are some factors regarding the ethical behaviour and professional conduct:

Behaviour: All of the professional organizations specify the type of acceptable behaviour in the workplaces at the time of recruiting the employees. The guideline regarding the behaviour in the workplaces deals with the language, work attire and harassment. The employees have to maintain the guidelines while working in the workplaces of the organization (Humphreys, 2010). In case of violation of the ethical behaviour, the work of the organization gets hampered and legal steps acne b taken against the employees who have violated it.

Integrity: One of the major factor regarding the ethics and professional behaviour in the workplaces is the integrity, i.e., keeping honest and do the right thing always. Especially, a high degree of integrity is needed in the jobs that deal with a lot of money.  Integrity also helps to avoid gossips and sneakiness at the workplaces (Liebler, 2010). It is good for the future growth of the carrier of the employees and the better production of the organization.

Accountability: This factor is about taking responsibilities for the actions. Marinating the scheduled workdays, arriving on time, putting the best effort with honesty is needed in every type of profession. These facts are very important for the efficient working of the employees, which is the basic need of any professional organizations (Amer, 2010).

Teamwork: Another vital factor of the ethical behaviour is the ability to do works with other employees. A key factor behind the growth of the job position is doing a high performance by working within a team without considering any personal matter with other employees. In every type of profession, the professionals should respect the colleagues and co-operate with them for the efficient performance (Davies, 2010).

Commitment: Guidelines regarding the ethical behaviour often include a high level of dedication to the work. The professionals with a high level of dedication to the work are very important to the organizations and can motivate others to perform well. In any type of profession, if any professional does not have the proper level of commitment then he or she will unable to give efficient performance in the working, which will be harmful to both the future growth of the staff and the production of the organization (Humphreys, 2010).

Ethical Behaviour in the profession of chef

The profession of chef has a great of responsibility as the chefs made foods for people, and they eat the food without any question. This includes a high level of trust, and the professionals have to keep it. To develop proper responsibilities in the professional chefs, the institutions that give the certificate regarding the professionalism have developed the certain code of ethics. The first and the most important duty of the chefs is to obey the rules and regulations for maintaining the public health and safety. An example of the right ethical behaviour regarding this factor is to provide the nutritious foods with fresh and hygienic products (Marshall, 2015).

The professional chefs should treat other employees with honesty and respect. They have to support each other in the working field for increasing their knowledge base and more production. They should not lie, cheat anyone or steal anything nor tolerate the people who do these kinds of activities. Honesty, Integrity and fairness are the major factors of ethical behaviour of this profession. They have to be seriously concern about the taste of the foods according to the people who will eat those. The right behaviour of a professional chef is to provide food with a prior knowledge of the taste and food allergies of the people to whom the food will be served (Small Business - Chron.com, 2015).

Professional chefs must have to disclose any type information asked by a client regarding the process of the food making or the products used in the preparation. They have to present their certification regarding the training of this profession honestly. To provide different types, tasty foods the professional chefs must have to learn new preparations continuously. Restaurants, private households and institutions need a high level of commitment in the chefs.

Ethical behaviour in the profession of professor

The professors have a great duty of developing the character of the students by giving them the proper education. To do so, the professionals need to maintain a high standard of ethics. In case of any ethical violation of the education professionals, the effect will be fall on the students. As the main aim of this profession is to develop the character of the students, so the ethical code of behaviour is very important in this profession (Callahan & Bok, 2014).

Ethical conducts to the students: The professional educator or the professors have a major responsibility of educating the students for developing a better character and accepting the challenges and responsibilities in future. The professors should deal with the individual problems of the students with respect to the applicable law and policy of the institution (Thomas, 2011). They have the duty of providing proper help to the students if they have any difficulties with the learning, safety or any health issues. They should treat all the students with the same level of priority. Any biasing is not expected from the professors towards the students (Carr, 2013).

Ethical conduct for performance: The learning process is endless, and the students may have a lot of questions in their mind for asking the professor. Therefore, they have to keep learning different types of new facts in the subject area. The professionals should maintain a good sound capacity and mental health with a high level of physical stamina for giving better performances in the workplaces. To provide the best teaching to the students, the professionals should give the teaching by evaluating the level of understanding of the students (Matthews,  2011).

Ethical conduct to the colleagues: The professors should give proper respect to the colleagues. They should co-operate with each other in the workplaces whenever required. The equality should be maintained in the behaviour of the professionals to all the colleagues regardless of the personal issues. The professionals should maintain all the confidential information about the colleagues (Sharkey, 2015).

Ethical conducts to the parents and community: The professors should be the concern to discuss the important factors and issues regarding the interest and behaviour of the students. The professionals should respect the culture of the traditional community, and they should develop a cultural environment like this in the classes. They have the active role in the relationship between the institution and community (News, 2010).

Examples of unethical behaviour in the profession of chef

Each and every professional organization has some ethical rules and the procedure for dealing the violation of these rules. The professional chefs cannot harass any of the other employees. In case of this type of ethics violation, any decision can be taken against the chef. They have to be honest and fair to the clients. Providing any wrong information regarding the food or service to any client is treated as the violation of ethical code. The client, as well as the authority, can take any legal step to the staff. Chefs are not allowed to steal anything for the workplaces. In case of finding any stealing by any chef, legal action can be taken against that staff and other employees who supported it.

Another issue of this profession is the behaviour of the clients. The chefs should not deliver any rudeness or rough behaviour to the clients. There is no law for joining the profession, but the valid certificates are needed at the time of joining. Providing any fraud certificate can be the cause of legal issues. Alcohol consumption is prohibited for the professional chefs in the workplace or coming to the workplaces in a drunken state.

Examples of unethical behaviour in the profession of professor

The profession of the professors is very crucial and have a high level of ethical consideration. In case of any ethical violation by the professor, the students may be affected by it. They should not give any special treatment to any student in a biased manner. They should not discourage any students if they have any problem in learning the process. The behaviour of the professor cannot be rude to the students in the classes. The professors cannot expose any confidential information regarding the students if it is not required by any law. It will be treated as the violation of the ethical rules.

The professors should not enjoy any professional privilege or personal advantages. The confidential information of the colleagues should not be disclosed by any of the professionals. They are not expected to make any false statement about any of the other professional employees of the institution. It has found that some of the professional educators do not like the way of teaching of some other educator, and they used to make comments about them. It is unethical for this profession and can negatively harm the character development of the students.

Comparison between the ethics of the professions of chef and professor

The two profession chosen for this assignment are form two different industries. The professions have different types of responsibilities. In case of the chef, the professionals have the duty of providing good quality foods to the clients whereas the duty of the professors is to develop the good character of the students by giving them the proper education. Although, the two professions are different, there are some similarities among the ethical conducts. In both of the two cases, respect is needed for the other employees within the workplace. Co-operation is needed in both of the two professions although the dimension of the co-operation is quite different. The important fact of the ethical conduct of the two professions is to maintain a high level of honesty and dedication to the job position. Without the proper dedication to the job position, a chef will not be able to deliver the good quality of foods and a professor will not be able to give proper education to the students. Both of the professional should maintain the confidentiality of the information about the colleagues, and they are not permitted to be the cause of any harassment of other employees of the respected organization. The chefs should be well behaved to the clients, and the professors should be well behaved to the students.

Another important similarity of the ethical behaviour of the two professions is the self-development. The chefs should keep learning about the new preparations for serving the clients where the professors have to learn new concepts and facts on the subject are for giving proper teaching to the students and providing right answers against their queries. The chefs have to understand the taste and health conditions of the clients before serving food, and the professors need to understand the level of intelligence of the students before teaching.

Conclusion

In this assignment the ethical behaviour in the workplaces has been discussed with respect to two different professions; Chef and Professor. After analyzing the various facts of the ethical code of behaviour of the two professions, it can be concluded that there are some basic ethical codes that apply to all type of jobs. After the individual analysis, the ethical considerations in the two professions are compared with each other. After this, it is found that the honesty, integrity and commitment are the basic factors of the ethical behaviour of every type of professions. Commitment is the vital factor in any profession. In both of the two professions, respect for other employees is very much needed. The main aim of the ethical considerations is giving better services to the clients in case of the chefs and case of the professors is giving better teaching to the students. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ethical codes of behaviour are designed for giving better services in all types of professions. Both of the two professions need to respect for the other employees and the co-operative behaviour in the workplaces. It ensures that the teamwork is also the vital factor of the ethical behaviour in the workplaces.
